Universal mats slide, bunch under the pedals and stop about ten centimetres short of everywhere that gets wet. Every winter, the salt and slush they don't catch goes straight into the carpet, and stays there.
Custom-fit mats are measured from the actual footwell of your vehicle, so they lock into the factory anchor points and cover the full floor including the sides. Raised lips and deep channels hold slush and grit until you take the mat out and hose it off.
For anyone keeping a car more than a couple of years, it's the cheapest way to protect the interior — and the carpet underneath is one of the first things a buyer or a lease inspector looks at.
